In the early 1930s, the United States produced excellent electrical properties and good stability, especially the non-combustible polar liquid polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), used in capacitors and transformers, to improve capacity and safety. Later, operational experience proved that PCBs were toxic, and countries in the early 1970s restricted use or ban. At present, synthetic oils are mainly used for dodecylbenzene (for self-capacity oil-filled cables), polybutene (for steel-filled cables) and a small amount of silicone oil for flame-retardant cables. Transformer oil mainly contains dodecylbenzene (mixed with mineral oil), silicone oil and ester synthetic oil. Due to the popularization and application of polypropylene film (PP film) in capacitors, various synthetic oils with strong gas absorption, high breakdown field strength and excellent compatibility with PP film have been developed. Synthetic oils can be classified into aromatic hydrocarbon synthetic oils, silicone oils, ester oils, ethers and sulfone synthetic oils, and polybutenes. The properties of commonly used synthetic oils are listed in the table. The characteristics of the PCB are listed in the table for comparison. The purification process of synthetic oil is often carried out by a clay adsorption method. In the purification treatment, the amount of clay is about 0.5 to 3% of the oil weight, and the treatment temperature is about 40 to 80 °C. For synthetic oils with high polarity and high impurities, the amount of clay and the number of treatments can be appropriately increased during refining.
